Researchers are working for a long time to find an answer to the question –
“ Can we slow the rate of aging in humans? ”
The recent study announced in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences described that there is a possibility in aging science through the analysis obtained with the dolphins.
Human aging depends on various factors like diet, anatomy, and lifestyle. Well, the dolphins were very useful to the researcher in this research. The dolphins used for the research were kept under unique circumstances where the influence of aging was highly controlled.
Why dolphins were used for this research?
Just like humans, these mammals also establish conditions like chronic inflammations, high cholesterol levels, and many more. These similarities are the reason for dolphins being used in this research.
The researcher analyzed four biomarkers which helped to compute the rate of aging. They are as follows –
- Hemoglobin – The protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues. It decreases with aging.
- Lymphocytes – These are the white blood cells which are also one of the body’s immune cells and they decrease with aging.
- Platelets – Tiny blood cells that help the body form clots to stop bleeding.
- Alkaline phosphatase – An enzyme found throughout the body, but it is mostly found in the liver bone and kidneys. It helps to detect liver and bone disease.
With the help of these biomarkers, the researcher was able to analyze the two different groups – the slow agers and fast agers. It was considered long ago that few people age faster than the others but, it was difficult to determine that people age at different rates said by the researcher by implicating the results in humans.
According to the researcher boosting the two biomarker’s hemoglobin and lymphocytes may be crucial to keep us healthy for a longer period of time. With the new research, it is also revealed that aging slowly saves us from the majority of the health issue that comes with time and circumstances.
The idea can help to develop the medicine and therapies which may help during the human aging process. Most of the aging research involves animals that have a short life span like worms and flies. The researcher also said that we need to find the mechanism which will help people to live longer and healthier.
The most important thing between dolphins and humans is that they share a lot of similar aging mechanisms as mentioned above. With the help of this research, there are proofs of slow aging in dolphins.
This research will be very helpful for the physicians and longevity researchers to get more developed clinical processes to the older people and help with the diminishing of hemoglobin and lymphocytes in the people who are aging.
