Mars life is now under top priorities of Elon Musk and it seems to be a challenging opportunity for him. In this decade, he aims to start a colony with nearly 1 million people on mars by 2050. Making mars habitable with terraforming is the ultimate challenge that will be faced after making up the colony. According to him, terraforming in mars won’t be possible in his lifetime.
In the Satellite 2020 conference in Washington Musk said “If we don’t improve our pace of progress, I’m going to be dead before we go to Mars. If it’s taken us 18 years just to get ready to do the first people to orbit, we’ve got to improve our rate of innovation or, based on past trends, I am going to be dead before Mars.”
Replying to a tweet by Astronomiaum Musk wrote recently “Life in glass domes at first. Eventually, terraformed to support life, like Earth.”
According to Musk, it has taken almost 18 years for the first humans to orbit. With this speed, it will be too late, and Musk would be dead till then. The rate of innovation and development needs to be improved.
Musk also wrote in a tweet that Terraforming is going to be much slower, it won’t happen as a quick fix. We would be able to build a human base in our lifetime though.
In 2019 Elon Musk said that he believes thousands of spacecraft would be required to form a colony on Mars. Out of it, 100 spacecraft will have to carry 100 tons of cargo along with it.
It is expected that this work would be completed in nearly twenty years and hopefully, it would then form a sustainable environment over there.
The most difficult work to be performed after the establishment of the colony is to terraform on mars. There have been several doubts and confusion over the proposition for terraforming on mars. It has only been possible by science fiction authors. In 1961, Carl Sagan was the first to come up with a serious terraforming plan outside of the science fiction, but the idea did not work. Later several serious propositions have been placed but nothing has been confirmed till now.
So, we expect that the rate of progress would be improved in the field of development and innovation, and only then it may be possible to build a human terraform society in the mars in this lifetime.
